Things are always interesting when the Icecats face the Barrington Broncos. On Wednesday, the varsity  Cats battled hard in Barrington but fell 3-1 in a game that was winnable up until the final few minutes.

The Cats were down 2-0 with less than four minutes left in the game when captain Tommy Tambourine scored at the 3:28 mark on an assist from Matt Majewski. However, Barrington put it away on a power play with just 1:20 left on the clock on a goal from Austin Bostock, who completed a hat trick.

Cats goalie Erich Held kept his team in the game with 29 saves, while Broncos goalie Justin Lukowicz made the same number of saves, fighting off a 20-shot Cats barrage in the second period.

The loss brings the varsity Cats season record to 4-2-1, with 9 points in the standings. The next opponent in Conant on Sunday, a change to redeem a tough 3-2 loss in an earlier match up.

Wednesday’s battle with the Broncos apparently didn’t end with the final buzzer. A number of Cats families and players reported harassment by some Barrington fans outside the arena. No one was hurt, apparently, but it’s a good reminder that hockey teams should follow the Vegas principal — let what happens on the ice stay on the ice.
