Varsity Cats Top Conant in Chippy Rematch (11-08-09) November 9, 2009Posted by claugh217 in Varsity.
The Varsity Icecats topped Conant 2-1 Sunday night in Hoffman Estates in a tight, physical battle between two teams that don’t seem to like each other very much. The win represented a bit of redemption for the Cats, who fell 3-2 at home to Conant on Oct. 24.
The Cats were sunk by early penalty trouble in the first match up. This time around, penalties remain an issue, but the Cats were able to kill off all but one double minor by defenseman Matt Majewski early in the third period, when Conant scored with just 5 seconds left to kill. That was all the scoring Conant could muster. Majewski was an intimidating physical presence all night, drawing the ire of the Conant fans and players, most of them probably secretly wishing he were on their team.
Justin Antolec tallied both Cats goals, and could have had more but for a couple of excellent saves by Conant goalie Kyle Weiner. Justin is emerging as one of the league’s top offensive threats, scoring 8 goals in just 6 appearances.
Freshman forward Peter Henderson got the helper on Justin’s first goal at 7:54 in the first, while sophomore forward Jeff Martin made a nice dish to get the assist on the second tally, which came just 20 seconds into the second period.
Netminder Erich Held turned in another solid performance, stoning Conant on 23 of 24 shots. The pace of shots increased dramatically as the game progressed but Erich remained sharp throughout. The Cats fired 20 shots at Weiner.
The Cats face off Tuesday night at 6 pm in an exhibition match at Lake Forest Acadamy. Then on Friday, the Cats will have arguably the biggest game of the year so far when they face undefeated Mundelein at Glacier, home ice for both clubs. The Cats need their fans to come out to the rink on Friday night at 8:30 pm.
