The Varsity Icecats secured a much needed win Saturday morning at the annual Stevenson Thanksgiving high school tournament, topping New Trier White 5-4 in a game that started as a blowout and ended up a nail biter.

The Cats fell 7-1 to a very tough Glenbrook North team on Friday. Saturday morning’s victory left the Cats with 2 points heading into a Saturday night matchup against Loyola Academy.

The Cats came out strong early in the game at 7:15 Saturday morning, an ice time most players and parents haven’t experienced since squirts. Connor Krukowski got things going at the 11:3o mark with a goal assisted by Mike Lauber. Justin Antolec added one more with four minutes left in the first and then Nick Young stuffed one home close in with just one second left on the first period clock. Connor added another in the second on a takeaway right in front of the New Trier goal.

Cats goalie Max Laughlin held his team’s lead, allowing just one goal on 15 shots through the first two periods. The Cats were ahead 4-1 at the start of the third, and Justin Antolec scored his second of the game less than a minute into the period, assisted by Joey Vandermey, which seemed to put the game on ice with a 5-1 advantage.

Then New Trier turned up the heat and fought its way back into the game, scoring three unanswered goals, including a fourth tally with 40 seconds left and the New Trier net empty. Laughlin faced a flurry of shots in the third and was required to make some acrobatic saves to keep his team on top. While bending, the defense didn’t break, and the Cats prevailed 5-4.

The Cats had most of their injured players back Saturday. Defenseman Brad Feinman and forward Jeff Martin continue to nurse injuries.
