The Varsity Icecats fell into a pretty deep hole Sunday night in Franklin Park, falling behind 3-1 against Guerin-Nazareth before clawing their way back to an eventual 4-4 tie.

Things started well for the Icecats when center Jeff Martin skated end to end and scored on a tight angle shot just a minute into the game. Guerin then roared back with three consecutive tallies, putting the Cats back on their heels.

The team kept its cool and came roaring back in the second period, outshooting Guerin 16-12 but outchancing them by a wider margin. The team really showed off the skill of its top offensive players in the second. The Guerin goalie held tough, making some clutch saves to keep his team ahead. The hard work finally paid off for the Cats with seconds remaining on the clock when Tommy Tambourine broke free, flew down the ice and buried it, assisted by Mike Lauber.

The Cats carried the momentum into the third when Tommy tied it up early in the period on a backhander assisted by Connor Krukowski and Justin Antolec. Unfortunately, Guerin answered on a hard slapshot with 7 minutes left on clock to regain the lead.

The Cats stayed with it and kept up the pressure. Finally, with 4:32 remaining, Jack Rieke punched a lose puck through the Guerin goalie’s pads in a scramble in the crease, assisted by Jeff (his second point of the night). Tie game.

Both teams used time outs in the final minutes to try and find a way to take both available points. The Cats held tough, with goalie Erich Held making some very good saves late to preserve the tie. With seconds left, it looked like the Cats would win in dramatic fashion, but Tommy hit the post, missing the game winner by literally fractions of an inch. It was a great effort overall for the team’s captain, scoring twice and setting a good example by battling every second he was on the ice.

While the team probably felt like they outplayed their opponent and should have won, they showed they can battle back from behind, which is always a good confidence booster. The Cats outshot Guerin 39 to 35.

The Cats now have 13 points, which is good for a tie for third place with Carmel. The next game is Saturday night at 6 pm vs. CCM at Glacier. CCM won the team’s first meeting, so the Cats will be motivated to even the series.
