Cats Top Fremd 2-1 December 13, 2009Posted by claugh217 in Varsity.
In arguably their best effort of the season, the Varsity Icecats topped Fremd 2-1 tonight at West Meadows. The Cats battled hard for three full periods, got some great goaltending from Erich Held and managed to take only two minor penalties.
The scoring started in the first with Jeff Martin taking the puck end to end, putting it on net off Tyler Shanholtzer’s stick and a Fremd defender’s skate. Tommy Tambourine also picked up an assist. Fremd answered a short while later, sending the game into the second period tied 1-1.
The Cats took the lead for good in the second, when team captain Tambourine buried a shot, assisted by Brad Feinman.
Held stood on his head, making 33 saves, including a breakaway stop in the third to keep the Cats in the lead. The Cats were more efficient, converting two of their 18 shots.
Other Cats who stood out tonight without making the scoresheet were forwards Connor Krukowski, Nick Young and Tony Rossetti, and defenseman Mike Lauber. The team overall battled hard, especially in the corners and along the boards, rarely losing a battle for a lose puck.
The win gives the Cats 16 points for the season. The next contest is against Huntley Friday night at 8:40 at Glacier.
