Cats Top Guerin in Gritty Rematch (1-09-10) January 10, 2010

The Varsity Icecats topped Guerin-Nazareth 3-1 Sauturday night in a game that was physical on both ends, but offensively largely one sided. The Icecats outshot and outchanced Guerin, whose goaltender kept his team in a game that might have a blowout.

In the teams’ previous meeting, the Icecats fell behind 3-0 but battled back to a 4-4 tie.

The Icecats put 35 shots on Guerin goalie Jeromy Semtner, while Guerin returned fire just 15 times. Cats goalie Erich Held was close to perfect, letting in only one goal on a well placed shot on a 2 on 1 chance late in the first period.

The Cats started the scoring off early in the first when winger Justin Antolec used his speed to catch up with a long pass and buried a hard shot from a tight angle. Defenseman Matt Majewski was credited with the assist. That was all the offense the Cats could muster in the first despite firing 15 shots.

Midway through the second winger Tyler Shanholtzer scored a nifty goal, finding a hole through a forest of arms and legs, with help from Brad Feinman and Peter Henderson. Otherwise the second period was marked by tight checking and lots of penalties. The Cats sat for 6 minutes and Guerin 8 in the second. Total penalties for the game were 12 minutes for the Cats and 10 for Guerin.

The Cats spend a little less time in the box and more time firing the puck in the third, finally scoring an insurance goal with less than three minutes left on the clock. Jeff Martin showed his skill skating through several Guerin defenders to get himself into shooting position and burying it, with help from captain Tommy Tambourine.

That’s how it ended. The win gives the Cats an 8-6-4 regular season record. The Cats face off Sunday 3:10 pm against Huntley in West Dundee. Then its on to Detroit Friday for the Big Chill tournament over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, where both the varsity and JV teams will compete.
